$100 for a 1996 to 1999 vehicle (fee is not refundable if your vehicle fails)
$150 for a 1995 vehicle, RV, or commercial gasoline TRUCK that weighs more than 14,000 lbs. (The fee is not refundable if your vehicle fails.)
Key Requirements & Exemptions
Required: 1976 or newer gasoline, hybrid, and alternative fuel vehicles.
Required: 1998 or newer diesel vehicles (14,000 lbs or less).
Exempt: Electric vehicles.
Exempt: Motorcycles.
Exempt: Gasoline-powered vehicles 1975 or older.
Exempt: Diesel vehicles 1997 or older, or over 14,000 lbs.
Exempt: Natural gas-powered vehicles over 14,000 lbs.
New Vehicle Exemption: Gasoline/hybrid/alt-fuel vehicles that are 4 or 8 model years old or newer do not need a biennial check.
When is a Smog Check Necessary?
Registration Renewal: Every two years for vehicles older than 8 model years.
Initial Registration: If the vehicle is being registered in California for the first time.
Ownership Transfer: If the vehicle is being sold or transferred.
